iPod of Printed Media May 7, 2008 18 out of 26 found this review helpful
I have had my Kindle since last Thursday and can tell you this thing is hands down a winner in terms of engineering, simplicity and ease of use. Elegant is the best word to describe it. Internet via CDMA to Webster's and Wikipedia is absolutely fantastic. A business model destined for success. The hardest part of using this really was opening the box and turning it on.
I have subscribed to Time and Fortune Magazines for $1.59/month each $19.08/year that is pretty close to the cover price, so the savings there is nil. However it is hard to put a price on the convenience; you can search content, carry a stack of issues, newspapers and books and you can buy another on the fly for wherever you are. NY Times best sellers are typically $9.99 as compared to $27.95, but when they come out on paperback they are cheaper than the $27 so that savings is debatable. The fact that you can buy a book and be reading it within 60 seconds anywhere you are is awesome. I did that today with a computer book, from the time of purchase until I was reading it was about 60 seconds.
There is an MP3 player built in, to listen to music while you read if you like that sort of thing. The SD slot allows for the addition of all kinds of memory and that also can server as a thumb drive from any PC you hook it to. You can read for two days without charging it. Best part it is easy on the eyes and 10 ounces!!
If you like to sit down with a magazine, newspaper or book, this is a must have gadget. I like to call it the iPod of printed media.
A library in my purse! May 6, 2008 18 out of 24 found this review helpful
After looking at the Sony eReader and the Kindle I purchased the Kindle and I am very pleased with my choice. I'm going on week 3 now with the Kindle and I'm really glad I have it.
The Kindle is lightweight and easy to use. Page turning takes a little getting used to but after about 20 minutes of reading I failed to notice the event anymore. I find the buttons to be very conveniently placed and with the provided cover, the Kindle is easy to hold one or two handed or propped on a treadmill.
I don't get to read for long stretches, and I often have multiple books going on different subjects at the same time. The Kindle offers the perfect solution for this! I have a great selection of fiction and non-fiction so I have lots of choices in one little packet.
Just wait for future models May 6, 2008 12 out of 68 found this review helpful
Wait for future models, this needs so much work:
*Color screen *Night time reading *Charge by USB *Water proof *More books *Internet browsing / e-mail
If you can wait, then wait. Who knows how long we'll have to wait but I will upgrade immediately this is serviceable, but not perfect.
Amazing Product! One Design Flaw May 6, 2008 16 out of 22 found this review helpful
The Amazon Kindle is the best gadget I have owned in years. It was built simple which is why it is such a big hit. My mom can use it, therefore anyone can. I stare at computer screens all day and my eyes can not take another backlit screen after I leave work. The Kindle answered that by using this amazing simple technology "Liquid Paper". It really is like looking at real paper. Eye strain is not a problem with this product period. Also, being able to increase the font size by just 2 easy clicks via a dedicated button on the bottom instead of hard to learn sub-menus is again simple genius. The speed at which the Kindle downloads a book or newspaper is amazingly fast. I downloaded a large novel in less then 30 seconds. Mind you without monthly service plan to sign up for or pay for. : ) Kudos for that idea. The only draw back is the Next Page button. It is too easy to hit when moving around. ie. when I am getting on or off the subway. I would put the button in a little less easy place to hit and a Prev Page button on the right side between the Next Page and Back buttons. Over all I am very happy. I work on a very large trading floor on Wall St. and the last time I saw massive interest buzz at the office like this was over the video IPOD. Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device
Love it! Love it! May 6, 2008 15 out of 22 found this review helpful
My daughters tried to purchase a Kindle for me last Christmas but at that time the Kindle was sold out. What a disappointment for me. Since then, I've been checking on-line once a week or so until March 13 when I decided maybe if I actually placed an order, Amazon would advise when they've restocked.
My Kindle arrived about 3 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. I used to read all the time and kind of got out of the habit for one reason or another. One reason is that books are awkward to hold when laying down to read, and who doesn't like to read while cuddled up on the sofa with a good book and a cup of tea. Kindle is so light weight and compact, I'm back to reading instead of watching TV.
I find Kindle the perfect item to take anywhere you go that you may have to wait for any length of time to be served. For instance, you know how doctors are always at least 30 minutes late for appointments and they never have any good reading material in their offices. I just open my Kindle and go for it.. No more getting impatient waiting because now I'm involved in a good book.
Improvements to be made: Better placement of the "page turners" because there's no safe place to hold the Kindle without accidentally turning pages, etc. Also, I'd like to see it lighted for easier reading in places where the lighting is not so great.
Other than that, I love my Kindle and carry it with me wherever I go - just in case!
