5 out of 5 stars A fantastic tea brewing solution.   November 10, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I've been drinking a lot more tea than I used to recently, and I've found the ingenuiTEA to be, quite simply, indispensable. The device is pretty clever in its design-- it's a 16 ounce cylinder sitting on top of a filter (like a permanent coffee filter), all of which sits on top of a spigot that's closed under normal circumstances. The cup's base has two concentric sections-- the outer ring does nothing more than support the device, the inner ring is recessed from the outer and opens the spigot. Place the ingenuiTEA on the counter and the outer ring supports the device. Place the ingenuiTEA on top of a standard width cup and the outer ring hangs over the edge and the inner ring gets pushed upward, opening the spigot and allowing liquid to pour through the filter and out of the bottom into your cup.

So what you get is easy tea brewing from loose leaves-- throw your leaves in the ingenuiTEA, pour your (heated) water over the top, close the lid and let it hang out for your desired steeping time. When you're ready, place the ingenuiTEA on top of your cup and you're done.

The device is virtually spill-proof-- it comes with a base to rest on while steeping so if you do spill, you've got something to spill on (I've used mine a hundred or so times by my best guess and had one spill-- because the ingenuiTEA was not placed cleanly on the base).

Cleaning is pretty straightforward-- apparently, it's dishwasher safe, but I've never dishwashed it. The filter comes out and everything else is easily accessible. The only area where a tea ball may have it beat is with more difficult to shake out herbals-- I make a lot of rooibos and find it really irritating to have to scrape out the leaves when I'm done.

Nonetheless, the device is fantastic and works quite well-- I've used it to brew all sorts of teas. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Teapot   October 21, 2008

This is easily the best teapot out there for brewing loose teas. It's ridiculously easy -- throw in some tea and add hot water. Put it over the cup after it steeps and the tea comes out minus the icky leaves. Really a wonderful time saver.

It works with any and all loose tea and will microwave (though I like adding hot water myself. Simple. Elegant. Doesn't need anything special.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than pictured model   October 4, 2008

I had the Teavana model of this, which is identical to the picture with a different logo. I've used it for a couple years, often twice a day, and my only complaint was that the filter isn't removable and starts to accumulate tiny particles of tea (tip: soak in Oxybrite). Eventually, mine started leaking a little so I replaced it with this item.

It's actually a different design than pictured, with a clear, sloped base and a removable filter. I haven't used it yet, but this looks like a big improvement. I'll revise my review if I discover otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars I'm A Believer Again   August 30, 2008

TIP: I've had this 'teacup' (16 oz.) for a while now. I recently became frustrated with it. I use green tea (leaves never bags) and I re-infuse the leaves. Normally I would pour the hot water into the cup, steep the tea the enjoy my cuppa.

A few weeks ago, I decided to try using cold water and popping it into the microwave as suggested. That, I thought, would eliminate the step of boiling a kettle full of water for 16 oz of tea. True, but the little strainer at the bottom of the cup kept popping out, and the leaves would then strain into my cup - annoying me and wasting my leaves. I was not a happy camper.

Well it finally dawned on me yesterday that the hot water worked to seal the little strainer. So now I have completely abandoned the microwave idea (probably wasn't good for me anyway). I pour a bit of hot water into the cup, wait 3 seconds, gently press on the strainer with my spoon, listen to it pop into place and seal. THEN and only then do I add my precious tea leaves and more hot water and wait 2 to 3 minutes for gratification.

When re-infusing the leaves, I press first with the spoon while carefully adding a bit of hot water. If I don't, when the strainer pops out the leaves already in there will slip under and end up in my cup.

I've noted that even when using the hot water, if you pour all at once the strainer will pop out. I don't know why this is happening now or if it happens only with mine, but the above is my solution if you encounter the same issue.

5 out of 5 stars So Easy to Use - make tea or iced tea in a snap   August 10, 2008

This amazing device is easier to use than a tea kettle and tea pot. I make yummy iced tea all the time - I will buy one for my daughter for use in the dorms. I bought the large size 32oz which is perfect - I think 16 oz would be too small. Also it is very easy to clean. Well designed great idea.
