The most expensive produce you'll ever buy June 8, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I love my Aerogarden, really I do, but it's like loving a girl who won't go out and get a job because she wants to sit around the house eating ice cream all day. Even if your total cost was the price of a seed kit, you would have to have quite a crop to justify the cost, but don't forget the initial price of the system, and replacement grow lights every six months! My first kit was mixed herbs, but only the basil gave me a decent yield; even so, I've gotta figure my cost to be something like a couple dollars per ounce of basil. But never say die! I like having the greenery indoors, enriching the oxygen, and it's easier than caring for a pet. My 2nd kit, cherry tomatoes, looks pretty promising so far, but I'm a little ticked that as soon as they started to sprout, the garden started flashing the "replace grow lights" signal! Amazon sells the lights for $19, but another vendor sells them through Amazon at a 7.50 sale price...so, not so bad. Maybe I'll get a scale so I can figure the real cost per lb. of my crop this time...but then, I'll have to factor that in as another cost.
AeroGarden Pro 100 June 5, 2008 The AeroGro Garden seems prone to some malfunctions and parts not working, but the Aerogro web site offers help and the phone service from the co. sends replacements parts quickly. The plants do grow well and it is FUN to use.
Aerogarden is GREAT June 3, 2008 I was hesitant to buy a product that was so proprietary and a bit pricey, but I decided to try it anyway. I checked into other grow light systems and other hydroponic systems. All pretty ugly or too big and complicated.
I have not been disappointed. It grew my herbs beautifully, with the exception of the chives that my cat took a liking to. Although Ihave an extensive outdoor herb garden (and vegetable garden), having fresh basil, parsely and thyme, etc. at my fingertips when cooking is a joy. Unfortunately, the cilantro I was so looking forward to was substituted by thyme. I bought another kit that has cilantro. Plus, I understand now that I can just plant cilantro in the extra foam thingies that can be purchased.
My problem is that I now want to plant lettuce. In Southern California, lettuce won't grow in the intensely hot summers, so I am faced with home grown tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc, and store lettuce. So, I will be purchasing another AeroGarden to grow lettuce.
Unlike others, I have had no trouble with the light, pump, or anything else. I highly recommend this if attractiveness and convenience are important. If attractiveness doesn't matter, there are other, cheaper systems that will do pretty much the same.
Great to have herbs readily available and without hassle May 30, 2008 I bought this a few months ago and am absolutely thrilled with the product. It is great to be able to just add water and the nutrient tablets and watch it grow. Being able to add fresh herbs to my meals has been fantastic. The only downside is that the seed kits and lamps cost so much to replace.
Fantastic Experience for the Horticulturally Challenged! May 12, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love having fresh herbs to cook with, but they are very expensive in my market. (Hate spending $8 for a bunch of fresh basil, using 3 leaves and throwing away the rest.)
But I've never been able to grow herbs in my kitchen window or in my garden. They always become heavily infested with aphids and I either over or under water them. Death is the result (of the plants, not my family).
My Aerogarden Pro 100 is wonderful! I've enjoyed every minute of watching my herbs sprout. Every morning I wake up and run into the room in which I have the Aerogarden to see that my herbs have grown dramatically since the previous day! The owner's manual is very comprehensive and clear, showing exactly how to prune and harvest each type of herb.
The Aerogarden provides a perfect environment for plant growth. After 7 days every herb had sprouted and after two weeks the basil is almost ready to start harvesting. Chives, mint, thyme, purple basil, green basil, parsley, and dill are all up and vibrantly growing!
Some of the problems folks have had with this unit are addressed in the current user's manual:
1) Roots can grown into the water pump, so check it and trim them away.
2) Tomato plants will not flower if they don't have a certain number of DARK hours a day, so adjust the light cycle to provide a dark period. (For example, don't have it sitting next to a window where it gets sunlight and have the lights running all night.)
3) Yes, the unit puts out a lot of light. Don't put it where the light will bother you. Mine is actually in an upstairs bedroom that I use for an office so I can close the door at night and let it glow away on its own. (During the germination phase for herbs, the light is on 17 hours a day.)
