IT'S SO EASY TO HAVE FRESH HERBS.. September 20, 2008 MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF ARE HAVING FUN WATCHING OUR FRESH HERBS GROW.AND THERE NO GUESS WORK TO IT, IT TELLS YOU WHEN TO DO EVERYTHING. WHEN TO WATER,ETC. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO START USING OUR FRESH HERBS WITHOUT BUGS..THEY REALLY LOOKING GOOD. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WHAT NEXT TO GROW
Great idea! but...... September 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love my aerogarden. I've gone thru two seed kits so far(the one that comes with it and the italian herbs) and both are great. Basil grows like a weed, as does mint & parsley..but chives barely seem to work in this. a few good ones grow and once you use them they don't seem to grow back. I try my best not to let anything else over shadow the chives so they get proper light, but they don't exactly flourish in this setup.
Otherwise, I can't express how awesome it is to have fresh herbs when you're in the mood to cook and in the end it's a total $ saver, getting a little package of fresh herbs(one kind) at the grocery store is 3-4 bucks, and you can never use the whole package before it goes bad. My only issue is, some of the herbs grow so high they grow into the light and burn. They have rectified this with the new models that go another 12 inches or so higher then original model. But for people who bought the original, it sucks. You pay $150 or so dollars for the whole thing, and to get a new arm light they want another $109 dollars!! Thats such a rip off. I'd like to think they'd update your arm for 25 dollars(just throwing out an affordable number here) for already being an aerogarden customer because you're obviously spending money to get the kits and new lights etc. I wish I had waited and known about the newer model, I kind of feel I was totally ripped off by the aerogarden company. paying upwards of $250 to turn your original into the pro series, when the pro series model is $169-199. So sad. so, DONT BUY THIS ONE(the original model)! go buy the pro series with the higher arm and more powerful lights and it will most likely be a happy buying experience for you, especially if you love to cook!!
Everything's growing with my Aerogrow! September 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well, I'd always wanted to try one of these and when Amazon.com had the price at $99.95... I talked my husband into it.
So far, I have to say all is well and the product looks nice and is performing just as advertised. Every herb plant (from the Gourmet Herb seed pod kit that came with it) came up and before the full time allotted ran out. Most were nicely ahead of schedule. I am just about to the end of the first two week germination period, so we'll see if the "add nutrient" lights come on properly.
The unit has been through several short power failures and nothing has disrupted the scheduling of the lights going on and off at the proper times. The light is bright, yes... but not so bright as a sunny window. My unit is in a finished basement room where I can keep it shut away from my plant-destroying young cats. Were it not for the cats, it *would* be on my kitchen counter!
However, before you buy one, you should be sure you have a good place to keep it and won't be bothered by the light. It is on 17 hours a day during the herb cycle. Me, I like light.
We did have one scare, when my husband smelled a burning smell coming from the unit one night. The smell was completely gone by morning when he told me about it and I checked the unit but I called Customer Service anyway. I was pleasantly surprised not to have to wait on hold. They said that sometimes there is a coating on the plastic that burns off within the first 3-4 days. OK... this happened perhaps just past that point, at about 4-5 days, so I assume it was just what they said. No further instances of strange smells since. Still, it was quite worrisome at the time, so I could wish the company might mention this possible occurrence in the manual so one might be prepared!
They did give me a quick way to check and be sure it wasn't my pump burnt out... and it clearly wasn't. So I felt safe continuing to run the unit and appreciated the quick help.
The pump has so far been VERY quiet, almost silent, actually.
I'm looking forward to seeing how my herbs grow. If they do well, I think I'll start looking for a place to put a secondary and possibly a third unit. Perhaps using one of those accessory wall stands. I already feel tempted to buy one for a friend as a gift, but will see just how well mine does first.
The one drawback of course is that you get hooked into needing to buy their seed or master gardener kits, their nutrient tablets and their grow bulbs (which are supposed to be replaced at six month intervals). So this is probably NOT the most cost effective way to grow. OTOH... I can look forward to basil that is not half-destroyed by earwigs! And FRESH herbs when all is frozen and brown outside. It's surely an EASY way to garden!
I'll try and update the review at some future date. But so far, so good!

Three of the seven herbs are not growing and the selection of plants isn't very good, think they should offer single plants.
Fresh Herbs & Salad Greens Year Round September 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I now own three AeroGardens. One for herbs, one for salad greens & one for chili peppers. Living in the Inland Northwest with 4 seasons, I can now have fresh herbs, greens & peppers all year. The AeroGarden is very low maintenance and is fast growing. I'm on my third planting of greens, my third planting of herbs and just starting my peppers. Their customer service is the best and I highly recommend this product.
