5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tree   April 19, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I recently bought two Japanese red maples--one in a five gallon nursery bucket, the other in a Bonsai pot from Brussels. The two purchases make an interesting comparison/contrast.

The tree in the nursery bucket (already transplanted) is presicely what it is--a healthy young tree that is still some years away from attainting a mature look, beautiful as it already is.

The tree from Brussels--and this is probably my tenth tree from Brussels in the last couple of years--is equally beautiful, an absolute joy to look at. But like all the other young trees I've ordered, it isn't actually a bonsai, not yet. What one gets from Brussels (in the $25-$75 range) is a lovely little tree that is in the early stages of becoming a bonsai. And that's precisely how customers should view their purchase. Cultivating these young trees into full-blown bonsais is the customer's task, and that takes years. Too many of the negative reviews that this company gets are from customers with unreal expectations of their modest purchase--or who acted on a whim and seem to have no real experience or patience with cultivating growing things. Then you have the real bone-heads, who fail to understand that a deciduous tree purchased out-of-season is naturally going to arrive leafless.

A note about this particular tree: the foilage is delicate and the tree arrives compressed from even the light-weight peanuts used for packing. Unpack the tree, place it oudoors, and let breeze and sunlight (morning or filtered) do their work. The tree will begin to fluff back into shape in just a matter of days. Also, these trees begin to lose their brilliant redness when shaded and can begin to fade and actually turn green very, very quickly. A three-day transit in a closed container can create a noticeable difference. Be patient. Once unpacked and placed outside in bright but gentle light, the tree will once again take on its lovely, deep-red hues.

Incidentally, this tree cost about the same as the one in the nursery bucket. Only this one looks like a minature tree with full bonsai potential, and it comes in a lovely bonsai pot. All in all, a bargain.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY   April 16, 2008

Bought tree in November 2007. Came in without leaves, looked dormanr because of winter. It is spring now (April 16, 2008), tree was not dormant, IT WAS DEAD. Amazon refuses to do anything about this tree. They have collected my $28.99 and sold me a dead tree. Rating should be a negative 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars WTF!!   February 13, 2008

For all of you that are complaining about the health and condidtion of the tree, please shut up and stop posting comments about this tree. For those of you that are too lazy to grow your own bonsai, you have to realize the time and dedication that it takes to grow a successful plant. You cannot expect a company that mass-produces bonsai at the Amazon.com level to actually put that much time and effort into it. And to hear people say that they are going to have to buy another tree, get off your lazy behind and do it yourself. You will be much more appreciative of the plant.

1 out of 5 stars Dead Leafless Stick in Pot.   December 17, 2007

This tree arrived at my house late and completely dead.

AMAZON SAID: "If upon the tree's arrival some leaves have dropped or turned slightly brown that does not mean the bonsai is unhealthy."
MY EXPERIENCE: Aside for one dried brown leave I found in the packaging, the tree was completely bare and lifeless. A big stick in a pot not suitable for my home much less for gift-giving (as was intended).

AMAZON SAID: Defoliation is the natural result of being in the low-light environment of a shipping box. Whenever possible, Brussel's Bonsai avoids using Styrofoam-popcorn packaging.
MY EXPERIENCE: The box was full of styrofoam popcorn. So much so that I had a heck of a time removing all of it from the box. Although I suspect that the tree was in bad shape prior to shipping and this only added to it's misery and ultimate demise.

So now not only do I have to scramble to find another gift, I got to repack this thing and haul it to the post office. In closing, if you want a leafless dead stick in a pot -- order this. If you want a beautiful Japanese Maple, go to a nursery and buy one yourself.

Shame on you Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Not a bonsai like the picture   November 12, 2007

My Japanese Red maple wasn't a bonsai. it was about 3 times larger than what the picture indicates. I received my tree almost completely dead with no healthy leaves. When i tried to get a replacement I was sent an even larger tree that was just as dead. There is no way to file a claim with amazon for this seller and I can't leave feedback either. Stay away from this seller!
