An excellent, interesting product! June 22, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend's 23rd birthday and he's extremely happy with it. The herbs have begun to grow and we can't wait to eat them!
So far so good June 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Bought this as a gift for my mother for Mother's Day, so she's had it for a month now. Already seeing some big herbs from the Gourmet Herb kit - the basil has already been harvested to slow it down from blocking the other herbs. No dead seeds, everything grew. As has been mentioned in some reviews, the light is almost shockingly bright. When it turns off on its timer everyone looks around the room wondering if we just had a problem with the electricity or something because of the sudden lack of light. My mother is very happy with it though, and I'm considering getting one for myself...the price tag is the only real issue.
I love this gizmo! June 20, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought my Aerogarden about 4 months ago and have been growing the International Basil kit. My results re not perfect, but they are good and the different varieties of Basil are delicious. Like any product, is has its pros & cons. Fewer cons, so I will begin with those;
The cord is a bit short and the light is quite bright. (My husband insists it could be seen from space.) Keep it out of bedroom sightlines and it will be fine.
The replacement kits are a bit expensive as are the bulbs. (Ways to save money- watch for store coupons and buy supplies from Amazon, when they have 4-for-3 special.)
Every single plant does not grow equally well.
But the PROS far outweigh the cons for me.
First and foremost, it is designed for ease of use, and it really is very easy. Seeds are already in the pods and the plant food is in tablets, which means it is pre-measured. Plus, the machine has very noticeable blinking red lights, to remind you when to water & feed. And the plants germinate more quickly that they do in pots.
Next, many people complain that the machine is kind of expensive. Well, I have actually shopped around and hydroponics systems really are expensive. And in most cases, the lighting is sold separately. BTW, all of the bulbs for these systems are expensive. So when compared to other systems with lighting, this one is relatively cheap.
Finally, it is just plain fun to have delicious herbs at my disposal whenever I want them. They find their way into pasta, omelettes, sandwiches, etc., on a daily basis. And since my house does not get much natural light, this added light is welcome.
For Basil Lovers June 13, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Truly a basil lovers dream. In the Gourmet Herb kit, the basil tends to overgrow everything else. But those other herbs are not as valuable in the kitchen. Yes it is nice to be able to clip a little parsley here and there as garnish. But mint, chives, oregano and dill are not as valuable to the cook as is fresh basil. The basil does really well in the AeroGarden and there is really no comparison between dried and fresh basil. So if you appreciate having fresh basil at your fingertips, you will certainly enjoy the AeroGarden.
Tasteless garden products June 10, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was really excited about being able to grow garden products in my kitchen all year long. Unfortunately, the results were not what I expected.
I started with the standard herb garden. All of the seed pods sprouted on schedule. One of the bulbs burned out within 2 months. Aerogrow guarantees the bulbs for six months (which, by the way is their recommended lifespan), so they sent me a new pair.
Now on to the garden products themselves. Don't get me wrong, they all tasted the way they were supposed to, but there wasn't the intensity I would normally get from something grown in the ground. I was hoping that the nutrients that come with every kit would provide the elements needed for the flavor. They didn't.
Since then, I've also tried the cherry tomatoes and the salad greens. In every case, even with normally tasty cherry tomatoes, there was absolutely nothing exciting about the flavor of anything I grew in the garden.
I won't be using it anymore. I'll be better off using regular small pots and good potting soil with a little fertilizer.
I can understand where hydroponics would be necessary and even taste good in the right situation, but using water exclusively for growing vegetables at home just doesn't do it for me.
