Just Weird December 13, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The little "tree" certainly looked healthy; yet the "trunk" was really weird - a bulbous "v" shape coming up to a top that had no branches, just a puff of stems with leaves. Had it not had a confined root system in a small pot with a wire it had grown around, I would have sworn someone had just chopped off a bush, let it sprout back and then dug up the plant and called it a bonsai. I took it to work to make sure it wasn't just me. Everyone agreed it was weird and ugly.
What's going on??? December 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the second ficus I ordered from Brussel. The first one, almost a year ago is doing great and a beautiful tree. So I thought I need one for my office and ordered this one. The tree came, and my excitement and anticipation died a quick dead. This one is much smaller than the last one, has no branches and looked like a few leaves sprouted out of some roots. Very weird looking, only about 4" total height, with a very small rectangular pot. Yes, no resemblance to the picture in Amazon.
Thought I need to mention that this is the first time Brussel disappointed me. OK..Brussel, don't make me think that ordering from you guys is like getting a box of chocolate, you don't know what you get until you open it up..
love the bonsai November 7, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's really cute and my boyfriend and I love it. It's also been a very easy plant to take care of.
Doesn't look like the same type of ficus in the picture... August 31, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
A good price on this tree. But I was disappointed when it arrived. The trunk was awful--it was very bulbous/tuberous, and huge compared to the leaf portion. Just ugly. I called Brussel's directly and explained that I wasn't sure I had even received the same type of ficus I ordered. They promised to call me back, but didn't. I called Amazon, and they quickly placed an order for a replacement. I e-mailed Brussel's to let them know to expect a replacement order, and explained about the first plant. Didn't get a response, but the replacement plant was much the same. The roots/trunk were less bulbous and more compatible with the overall size of the tree. It wasn't quite as unattractive, but still didn't look like the same tree as displayed in the picture.
Plants are tricky things March 17, 2007 46 out of 46 found this review helpful
When this little bonsai first arrived it had many leaves and was very healthy. After a few days its leaves began to dry out and it looked like it was going to die. After doing some research I found out a few things.
First thing is drastic changes in temperature (more than 20 degrees F) can affect the plant health. When you first get your plant it has to warm up to room temperature so it might lose some leaves in the beginning. Also, I live in the northeast and during the transition to winter to spring we often will have drastic temperature changes. (Yesterday was 65, warm and sunny, today it's snowing.) I had left the tree by the window where it was cold and drafty and I noticed that some leaves began to curl up. It does not like drastic temperature changes.
Second thing is I was not watering it enough. It needs to be watered once a day consistently. To check if it needs water, stick your finger in the soil part where the roots are. If it is not moist it needs to be watered.
I have found the best watering method is to put it in the shower for a couple of minutes. This is the best because the leaves get hit with water and the rest drips down to the roots.
Also, once a week I submerge the roots/pot in water for 5 minutes. The directions suggest to do this. However, do not do this too often as the roots can be plugged with too much water and then they will die. Then Bye bye tree.
Third thing is to take care of the dead parts if leaves do die. I pruned the dead branches and cut the dead leaves off. New leaves have begun to sprout!
Indirect light is fine for this plant, however I have noticed it grows new leaves faster if it gets 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. Be careful! Too much sun can cause it to need water again. Remember the finger test.
Plants are living things and they need care. Be wary of this if you plan to purchase this bonsai.
