Decrease in Price AND Quality December 3, 2008 I purchased two of these bottles in May of 2008 with the stainless steel caps. We were very pleased with them and in August I purchased another. Although the third bottle was more than 20% less than when I made the first order, the quality of the bottle has degraded by at least 50%.
It was immediately obvious upon opening the package that this was a much cheaper steel. It is thin, light-colored and rough. The inside of the older version is polished and smooth while this one is dull and hard to clean. My husband convinced me it was still good or else I would have returned it on the spot.
We've had it now for 4 months, compared with the 7 months of the first two. All get the same general treatment and this last one is MUCH worse off. The plastic on the top of the cap is cut up and gouged and cuts into your hand every time you have to open it. More importantly, the steel is dented all over and is beginning to rust. There are dents along the bottom edge as well which make the bottle wobbly and unstable. This has not been through any use to cause such damage. The older bottles, with the thicker, higher quality steel, are holding up nicely and look as new as the day we bought them.
I feel duped by a company that drew me in with a nice quality product and then lowered their standards. I will never buy anything from Klean Kanteen again. The $5 decrease in cost does not make up for the fact that I am throwing this bottle away 4 months after purchasing it.
Good overall, but problems with lids December 3, 2008 I bought two 18 oz Kanteens, one with a loop lid and the other with a flat lid. Though the Kanteen is a good size and easy to hold and clean, the lids have been a problem. The flat lid doesn't always feel like an air-tight seal, probably because of the metal-on-metal connection. It is, however, easier to open than the loop lid, which is very difficult to open unless you have very strong hands or a screwdriver handy.
As advertised December 2, 2008 This is my first stainless steel water bottle (18 oz, with poly loop cap), and I really like it. No more deformed plastic bottle / bad tasting water! The only down side is that the water gets warmer on hot days and cool on cold days. but plastic water bottles have similar problems too.
I love it! December 1, 2008 Some reviews said the water has a metallic taste. I have not noticed that but it might be because I have the sport cap so I don't put my mouth against the can. I have no problem getting the water out like I do with my neoprene bottles. I always had to partially unscrew the cap so I could suck the water out and then it would leak. With the kanteen I twist it ever so slightly and it comes out fine. I'll never go back to plastic.
Great item! November 29, 2008 I thought myself to be one of those people who are sensitive to the metallic taste of the water in stainless steel container. Fortunately, I didn't taste anything metallic and only clean tasting water.
