Best for parties, but not Amedei's finest product June 29, 2007
After my experience with the Amedei Limited Edition Chuao bar, also available on Amazon, I had to expand my horizons with Amedei and will endeavor to write reviews on all of their products. For those of you who have tried Amedei products before, you'll recognize this as blatant self-serving, but for the rest of you let me assure you that I only have the most noble of motives - to provide an honest review based upon personal experience.
That being said, I must admit that I have become a fan of this company. Everything I've tried so far from this company has been of extraordinarily high quality, and these continue that trend.
As noted, I first tried the Chuao bar and followed with several other fine varieties, so I had accordingly high expectations of the Special Amedei Pralines Selection--enough so that I splurged for the big 36 piece box. The box itself was nice, a stately and masculine black box that contrasts nicely with the boxes of most other chocolate companies. Opening the box allowed an enticing blend of aromas from the different mixed chocolates, but the first disappointment followed quickly--unlike the photo, the chocolates in the box appeared rather dull, more matte than the glossy pieces shown. Reminding myself that chocolates are for *eating*, not looking at, my disappointment evaporated as I greedily reached for the first piece. Sinking my teeth into the chocolate and taking about a third of the piece, I carefully chewed and swallowed...and found disappointment. Now, don't go getting me wrong--these are great chocolates, excellent even. They just aren't...amazing, like the bars are. Sacrificing my body for science (or at least a good review), I felt that I should take several more samples, just in case the first one was an anomaly. They were all very good chocolates, just not the knock-your-socks-off, this-is-chocolate-as-God-intended kind of experience that the bars are, and the disappointment drops these chocolates down to the mere mundane world. The fillings were quite interesting and good with several novel blends that you'll not find anywhere else, and while the chocolate itself was very good it seems that something about the process in making the pralines changes the texture of the chocolate. Or perhaps it is the fillings that change the perception of the chocolate. At any rate, they are very good and are the equal of any other filled chocolate out there, but compare poorly with Amedei's other offerings. Not that it stopped me from consuming the whole box, mind you. They do pair nicely with red wine, it should be noted, and I think that is due to the strong flavors of the wine complementing the chocolate and filling, where alone the filling seems to overwhelm the chocolate. Hmmm...in reflecting on my other reviews of Amedei products, this probably is the best one to serve friends at a party, where the exceptional traits of this chocolate would shine--and saving the bar chocolates for quieter, more intimate times where the subtleties can come out clearer.
As with any order from Amedei, it will be shipped with ice packs to preserve the integrity of the chocolate but has the unfortunate effect of driving up the total cost of shipping. Anticipate a significant shipping charge if ordering just one item. My recommendation is to order several items to spread out and justify this cost, which only makes sense as this chocolate is too good not to share with friends!
Expensive disappointment June 23, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Amedei makes excellent dark chocolate (check out the Chauo bar for a fantastic experience). I was so impressed by the dark chocolate bars I had hoped that the quality would be mirrored for the Pralines selection. The chocolates were dry, crumbled and were a very expensive disappointment.
Very enjoyable and decadent March 15, 2007 The Amedei Pralines were very enjoyable and worth the cost. An excellent idea for any special occasion or just for spoiling.
bad service and will you rip off March 9, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this for my wife for Valintines day and had paid extra for over night delivery so I could hide it from her but recieved it 10 days later. I will never do any buiness with these people because they are hard to get in contact with and never fix the problem. I never got a refund and Lindts Chocolates tastes a lot better then this sorry tasting chocolate. Save your money and buy something that is worth the money that you know that tastes great and Amedei is NOT where it is at.

We were very disappointed in the quality of the box of chocolates. They were dry, stale, and unappetizing. We did have excellent customer service. We contacted the company and was refunded our money.
