The one-week clock repeats the cycle every seven days, or you can choose the skip function for watering every second or third day. Good Realiable Water Timer July 20, 2008
Bought the Gilmour 9400 in June '07 for the dry Redmond WA summers (yes,it's dry here a few days a year). So far I like it and it does the job nicely. I scheduled to run every 3rd day (2x per day) and have had no problems at all at the time of this writing in July '08. Battery life is good and I replace the batteries at the beginning of each season (I see what my trusty battery tester says about what's left on the battery lifespan). I like the multiple scheduler time options (# of hrs+mins on demand, or scheduled every 2nd/3rd day, scheduled any day of week (i.e. m,t,w,th,fr,sat,sun). Only thing I'd ask Gilmour to try to improve is the clarity/brightness of the screen prompts. On a bright day it's bit tougher to read the prompts but I simply cup my hands over it and it darkens it enough to see the prompts a bit better. Read the owners instruction guide and operation should be easy enough for you. I would still buy it again after a year of use. Paid $40 for it (plus tax) with a free shipping coupon.

This is the second Gilmor model I have used, both relatively short lived. This particular unit is in it's second year. And having a problem similar to WW's - the timing unit seems to be working ok, but apparently does not have sufficient power to turn the ball valve, which seems to require an inordinate amount of pressure to turn by hand. It is also not possible to dissamble the valve-it seems to be mechanically pressed into it's housing. Despite this I plan to investigate replacing the valve part of the unit, as there seems to be no other simple alternative to timed watering.

I have found this device to be superior to those purchased at the big-box hardware stores in my area. Main advantages I have noticed:
1. Two piece design, providing detachable timer/battery mechanism and valve. Allows you to remove programming/battery unit from valve body without having to break hose connections. Allows battery replacement or reprogramming to be performed inside the house or in a more comfortable position than leaning over the flowerbed.
2. Well sealed battery/programming compartment. Previous timers I have installed tend to have poorly sealed battery compartment covers and flimsy battery leads that easily break or corrode if any water leaks from hose fittings.
3. Straighforward programming interface. Offers a lot of flexibility with watering times.
If the device had a built-in backflow arrestor it would be better yet. Overall, though, the best timer I have yet purchased.

I bought this product based on reviews I read on Amazon. I had already bought another timer from Home Depot, but returned it because of the cheeziness of its construction and some real negative reviews that I found on the Internet.
This product is stable, period. I have had absolutely no problems with it other than scratching up the display which makes it somewhat hard to read (mostly my fault).
The ability to remove the control part so that you can program it while holding it in your hand is really cool and you can always use the feature as a really manual way to control on-off of the water (the valve itself is exposed when the control is removed)!
I recommend this timer highly, especially after several experiences with other hose bib timers that were either really rugged but had almost no programming flexibility or ones that had good user-interfaces but fell apart within a few months.
I live in southern Arizona and the timer is exposed to the direct sun for the first half of the day. This is a real test of any timer's ability to handle heat and intense sunlight. So far this timer has had absolutely no problems with it.
