Very fun Co-Op game January 8, 2009 This game is definitely built for those people who enjoy playing in a Co-Op environment with a friend. Since my friend Dan and I enjoy going through a story line as a team, this game seemed like the perfect purchase for us. It took a little while to get used to the controls in this game, so if you get frustrated after a few minutes, don't worry that's part of the learning curve.
I was surprised this game was not a First Person Shooter, because I essentially thought this was a Halo rip off with a different setting. Instead this is a third person over the shoulder view, which is not the easiest for aiming at targets in certain situations. Usually I am not a fan of this view, so it took some getting used to with this game. When we first started playing through this game we thought it was just okay, but before we knew it we had played it until 2:00AM and at that point we figured it must've been better than we thought. Basically you play as two elite forces people for a contracting company, because the U.S. military isn't as good as going into places covertly and taking out the bad guys. You spend a good deal of time fighting in areas like the Middle East and fighting various terrorists, so in that regard it's somewhat of an "up to date" game. Don't worry there's actually a decent plot twist in this game that doesn't make it feel like it's that mundane all the time. The missions are actually pretty challenging and we had to repeat sections together once in a while.
I found the graphics fairly impressive for the Xbox 360 and I think they definitely use the higher processing abilities in that regard. Since this game takes place in modern times you get to use weapons that are currently available. The weapons selection ability was definitely one of the coolest parts of the game. As you take contracts and complete them for pay you can take your money and upgrade your weapons! This was one of the more fun parts of the game for me. Periodically the game gives you the option to visit your arms dealer so you can switch weapons mid-mission as well. The only part of this game I hated playing was whenever you had to control the hovercraft. Talk about trying to control an incredibly unwieldy vehicle. I wish standard vehicle controls for things like that were the same as the Warthog on Halo, but alas, I spend more time trying to get the hovercraft to move straight than I do trying to enjoy the game in those sections! Luckily it's not something you have to drive frequently.
This game is definitely designed with Co-Op in mind. I never tried it with just using the AI as my Co-Op teammate so I'm not sure how that works, but based on what I've read, it's not that great. Personally, I would only pick this game up if you do have someone to play with that also enjoys these types of games.
A fun game with some drawbacks..... October 27, 2008 I've read a few reviews of this game from people who have had a tough time with the games tone. Yes, the two main characters sometimes say some really bizarre things but personally I found this incredibly amusing. I don't think the game takes itself too seriously and as a casual gamer it doesn't expect you to either. That's the trick with this game, you have to treat it with a grain of salt. I can't remember a game that had me laughing out loud as much as this one did. I think it really adds to the games overall feel. The dialouge is just hilarious. And it works. Combine this with the decent gameplay and stunning visuals and you have a game that is well worth the 20 bucks you can get for used. Sure, it's not halo or gears, but I don't think it's trying to be. It's a fun game that delivers good action and an entertaining story that just makes you keep playing. It's fun as heck.
Very Good September 28, 2008 I rented this game, came home and played it. I loved it. I am a kid and haven't played many M games. I played it for a few minutes and you could already tell there where bad words in the game. The graphics are great. One of the other great things about the game is that you can earn money and use it to buy more guns and armor. I would recomend this game to anyone who likes 3rd person shooters. Another great thing about the game is that you can be ducking behind a barrier and just put your hand up and shoot which I haven't seen in any other game. The last great thing is that if you're next to your partner and press A they will interact with you, but if you press the Right Trigger you will wack, headbut, and hit each other in fun! Overall I think this is ok for kids over 11 only if you're not afraid of trash talk.
bad language September 19, 2008 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
The game is awesome. THe coop gameplay takes the game to a whole new level i played it and beat it several times with my friends. The Single player game is same a coop but it just isn't as fun.
Although I loved the game the language was over the top. It totally ruined the game having that much cursing... i mean i can handle a little her and there but i think every cut scene had one curse word or another. I was unnessicary and took away from the game. I don't care what anyone else says there is no need to put anything like that in a video game. If I had know it was going to be like that I would not have purchasing the game.
Overall the gameplay was good so if you aren't afriad of offensive language I reccomend you buy the game. I would not have bought this game for my kids given what i know now though.
Probably would be better with two September 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I finally got around to renting Army of Two, and will definitely recommend a rent instead of a buy. While the game is enjoyable, there are some things that hold it back. Your AI partner leaves much to be desired; there are times when you'll tell him to hold aggro, only to find out that he doesn't really feel like it. This is a pain later on when you've got a ton of enemies shooting at you, and a dumb computer doing it's own thing, causing you to restart countless times at the last checkpoint. I imagine that this wouldn't be an issue in co-op, since you and your buddy could talk it out (I didn't play co-op, so I can't say for sure). Along those lines, I had to shoot the computer at 3-4 different spot because he kept getting stuck on the level. That leads to another issue; getting stuck. There were a few times in the game (most noticeably the monorail level) where I myself would get stuck. I would move the stick, and the camera would shake like I was moving, but I was not moving at all. It fixed itself eventually, but it was a huge inconvenience.
If you're expecting a long, engaging game, look somewhere else. It took me five days to beat (due to other responsibilities), with a total of maybe 6-7 hours game time. It probably wouldn't have even taken that long had I actually had a human partner. The story is a little thin, and I felt like it was trying to make a moral point (private military companies = evil corporations). Sometimes the objectives aren't always made clear on your GPS. If you look to far right or left, the red arrow guiding you will disappear...and sometimes there's not even a red arrow to guide you.
At times, the weaponry feels a little weak, and this leads to another of my issues: you knock someone down with a shot (say a sniper round or rifle shell), but you can't kill them until they're going through their get back up animation. If someone's on the ground, and I'm shooting them, they shouldn't be able to get back up.
For parents, you need to know there is a LOT of cursing. I know the game takes place with two ex-Army guys (and I know how Army guys are, being a former one myself) put into some overwhelming firefights. So, like a good soldier, they're gonna curse...a lot, and then some. It's not a problem for me now, but being a new father I'm sure in the near future it will become one. As for the violence, I think it's fairly tame compared to some games (namely Gears where you can chainsaw the locust with blood spattering on the screen)...there's blood, but not an overabundance of it.
I think my final gripe with the game is the menu screens/load and wait times. Just to start playing, you have to go through 4 (if I remember correctly) menu screens. Then you need to wait for the game to load. If it's your first time, you'll have to watch a cut scene (which you'd probably do anyways). If it's your second time, you have to watch the same cut scene...that's right, there's no skipping ahead to the fun parts you sneaky tricksters! During the mission, you can go "mid-mission" shopping, which is a neat idea...only it takes a while to load the screen, then you need to go through even more menu options to get what you want.
Overall, I had an alright time with the game. If not for trying to get the achievements, I wouldn't play through the game again. It's good for a run through, but after that there's not really much to bring you back (unless you're after achievements like myself).
