Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Juniper Procumbens "nana". This dwarf Juniper bonsai tree from Japan is the most popular evergreen in the U.S. When we think of a traditional bonsai tree and what it should look like, we think of a "Juniper Procumbens Nana." It is very hardy, long-lived, and tolerates many adverse conditions. This is an excellent tree for the beginner. This tree is grown with care at Bonsai Boy of New York Nurseries. Watch out for imitations.

2 out of 5 stars i'm angry and confused!   December 27, 2008
(in response to the last glowing review)
Well then, why is what you're saying running totally counter to the care sheet that came with the bonsai boy juniper!? That plus I'm positive it advertised "eligible for free shipping"--but alas I paid the 8.95 anyway. AND the picture is full and lush. Mine is pretty darn thin compared to that....... But the worst part is, the Bonsai Boy care sheet says specifically if you bring it indoors to keep it DARK. This is saying keep it well-lit while indoors. I live in Northern New England. It's too cold almost 6 months out of the year to keep it outdoors, and I chose Juniper because the reviews I read said it was a good beginner tree. Which is it, lit or dark indoors?

It looks exactly like the picture. The only thing I didn't like was the bowl has pebbles to the top which makes it hard to water without it running off. So, the little guy gets thirsty and is starting to turn brown. You are going to have to keep a close eye on it.

5 out of 5 stars Bonsai is a Japanese term meaning "tree in a tray"   November 7, 2008

The Juniper Bonsai is the very definition of what bonsai should be: A classic shape, long-lived, and easy to take care...making it ideal for the beginner bonsai hobbyist. Originating in China, the Juniper has low, compact foliage spread with cascade and semi-cascade styles...coupled with hard resinous wood makes the Juniper one of the best loved for advanced sculptural techniques.

Bonsai require a great deal of sun light and do best outdoors, but can be kept indoors if in a well sun-lit area. If you do keep it outside, the Juniper does well in almost all conditions except freezing and extremely hot climates. Since the bonsai live in small pots, watering is very important...this is usually the reason why most bonsai die...so check it everyday. An ideal balance can be tricky to determine, but the general rule of thumb is placing the entire pot in a sink of water an inch or two deep and let the water absorb from the holes in the bottom of the pot. After watering, allow the bonsai a few days to breath and repeat. Misting is also strongly recommended to keep the foliage green and healthy.

Fertilizing your bonsai is also very important. Spring is when the bonsai begins its growth cycle and requires a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen...after the summer season, the bonsai begins to slow its growth and fertilizing should be reduced to every four to six weeks...in the winter, the bonsai is in a dormant stage and requires a non-nitrogen fertilizer. Following these steps will keep your bonsai's root system healthy and active...a vitamin supplement is an excellent compliment to fertilizers. Pruning a bonsai is difficult to master but very rewarding...I would recommend reading several books on this topic to learn about the different styles...removing new shoots and unwanted branches during the growing season is the basics...if you're not interested in the art of bonsai.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely little tree   May 4, 2008

Fast shipping, and looked healthy and full when unpacked. I had gotten another bonsai (looked similar, a small juniper) at a garden expo, and it was dead within a month. This new plant is luscious after two months, just followed the simple instructions. I used the tiny ceramic Japanese man from my first plant with this second one, and he obviouly likes sitting under this beautiful one much better!
