 coffee bean vac December 31, 2008
I received this for Christmas this year and use it every day and have not changed the batteries yet. It works great and I love the vacuum sound as it lets me know my Kona Madame Pele beans are going to be fresh each day. No complaints here, I have no idea what the others problems are. Best unexpected gift I recieved. KMRN

I purchased this a year ago and started using it right away. I have yet to have to change the batteries since initiating use. It maybe self-activates once every four to six weeks. I use beans from the canister on average 3 to 4 times a week. I would recommend this product.
 Good idea, bad execution December 21, 2008
I received this electronic vacuum sealing canister as a gift. I used rechargable batteries and had to recharge only once every few weeks. After a few months however, the pressure from the vacuuming became too much for the lid clasp and broke. I have since tossed this item and bought old-fashioned canisters with the rubbery seal.

I bought this a few months ago, after reading all the reviews here on Amazon. I had a few doubts, but I went ahead and bought it anyway. I want everyone to know, I love this thing to death. It keeps my coffee as fresh as the moment I bought it. If you have doubts because of other bad reviews like I did, know this:
1. The top has a silicone gasket which keeps a good airtight seal. I took the batteries out to test this, it kept vacuum for over 2 days.
2. Even kept on the 12 hour setting, the batteries last me over 2 weeks. (but definitely use rechargeables!)
3. It's quiet. Not whisper quiet or anything; but the noise from your drip coffee maker is likely louder.
This thing does it's job perfectly. Every day when I open it up my coffee smells and tastes just like I when I first put it in. If you REALLY love fresh coffee you will adore it. I'd say the only real con is the price, which is a bit high for just a coffee container. But if you're willing to spend the money, I think you'll agree it's worth it.
Hint for new users... December 14, 2008
I just got this, and it seems to be working fine now, but I wanted to give a hint to new users in case they have the same problem I had at first. When the BeanVan arrived I unpacked the unit, cleaned it up, filled it with coffee beans, and closed it. It started to pump away and stopped a few minutes later. I thought everything was fine, but I noticed the vacuum indicator had not depressed like it was supposed to. Well, I figured that maybe the indicator wasn't working right, but to be on the safe side I opened up the canister, closed it again, and let it do its pumping thing one more time. Same thing. The indicator didn't budge. Finally, it dawned on me that the machine doesn't have a sensor that makes it stop when a vacuum has been achieved (apparently, the earlier units had such a sensor). It is merely running on a timer. So I opened it up again, but this time I took a wet sponge and carefully wiped around the rubber gasket in the lid and the top of the container itself, making sure they were both perfectly clean. When I closed it again, the pump started up and the vacuum indicator indeed slowly began sinking into the container's lid, just like it is supposed to work, according to the instruction manual. Also, towards the end of the pumping cycle, you can plainly hear the pump start to bog down as it works harder to pump the last bit of air out. So this is my warning: If the vacuum indicator doesn't sink make sure the lid gasket is really, really clean or this gadget just won't work right. By the way, the unit is not "noisy" at all, as some people have indicated. Really, it's barely even audible. The unit itself seems to be made well enough. Let's hope the pump lasts!
